The need for a climber to have a first aid kit with them at all times is a strong recommendation of the HSE , but their standard recommended contents are not suitable for the types of injury climbers are likely to encounter.
The new Dragon first aid kit has been designed specifically for climbers and contains some important extras.
A standard wound dressing found in standard first aid kits is designed to be applied by a another person and is virtually impossible to apply correctly to your own arm. It has been replaced by a Traumafix bandage which is designed to be applied by yourself and it makes it easy to exert and maintain pressure on a large wound.
Eye irritation and injury is a common problem whilst climbing with saw dust etc blowing around visors and safety glasses. The Climbers kit includes a tube of sterile eye wash.
There is a whistle for attracting attention
Friction burns with ropes can occur and without a water supply it is impossible to take the heat out of a burn, the climbers first aid kit has a sachet of Reliburn which is a cooling burn gel. This will sooth the burn and absorb heat to help prevent blistering.
